A team of scientists from Thackeray Wildlife Trust has discovered a new species of gecko in the Western Ghats mountains of India. The discovered reptiles were named Cnemaspis vangoghi in honor of the famous Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine ZooKeys.
According to zoologists, the patterned skin of lizards is reminiscent of the painting “Starry Night”, one of the artist’s most famous masterpieces.
Males of Cnemaspis vangoghi have yellow head and front part of the body, and light blue spots on the back.
Geckos live among rocks and trees in the deciduous forests of Srivilliputhur. These are small animals no longer than 3.4 centimeters. They are diurnal and are especially active in the early morning and cool hours of the evening.
Cnemaspis vangoghi was described as a previously unknown species, along with another species of its genus, Cnemaspis sathuragiriensis, named after its species locality, Sathuragiri Hills. According to scientists, the lizards found have a very narrow habitat, which is unusual for lowland species.
Paleontologists before opened a new species of ancient amphibian and named it after Kermit the Frog from Sesame Street.
