“Tired” immune cells in women may become targets of drugs that prevent breast cancer. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. Nature Genetics.
Everyone has the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, but inherited mutations in these genes increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Scientists from the University of Cambridge have created the world’s largest catalog of human breast cells. For this, they examined 800 thousand breast cells obtained from 55 women.
This made it possible to identify early signs of cancer in carriers of BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. It turns out that their immune systems cannot get rid of damaged breast cells, which can eventually turn into cancer. In previous studies, these “tired” immune cells were found only in women who already had breast cancer.
Immunotherapy drugs are already available to combat breast cancer with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. Scientists believe they can also be used to prevent cancer. They plan to test this approach on mice soon to prove its effectiveness and determine the optimal drug dose.
