Flu is almost twice as likely to cause neurological damage as Covid-19. This was reported by health day.
Scientists compared data obtained from 70 thousand people hospitalized due to flu and 70 thousand people hospitalized due to Covid-19.
Overall, 4.9% of flu patients and 2.8% of COVID patients developed neurological disorders in the year following their illness. 3.2 percent of flu patients and 2 percent of Covid-19 patients went to the hospital due to migraine. 2.1% of flu patients and 1.6% of COVID patients took medication for epilepsy.
Neuropathies and movement disorders were also more common in post-flu patients. The prevalence of stroke and dementia was about equal, but both conditions were slightly more common in flu survivors.
Scientists believe their discovery is good news. The majority of adults in the United States (where the research was conducted) have contracted the coronavirus. And the fact that its consequences on the nervous system are similar to those of ARVI allows us not to expect a catastrophically large workload on neurologists.
Previous scientists I learnedthat gut bacteria protect people from life-threatening infections.
