UK prison overcrowding opens new gap in Conservative Party

El aumento del número de presos en las cárceles de Inglaterra y Gales está provocando un enorme dolor de cabeza al primer ministro británico, Rishi Sunak. Cerca de un 60% de los centros penitenciarios están por encima de su capacidad y apenas quedan poco más de un millar de camas disponibles de un total de 88.935 plazas, según datos del Ministerio de Justicia. La situación ha obligado al Gobierno a tramitar una nueva ley en el Parlamento para evitar el ingreso en prisión de las personas condenadas a sentencias cortas, algo que ha provocado fricciones con el ala dura del Partido Conservador, que teme lanzar un mensaje poco contundente contra la delincuencia a pocos meses de las elecciones generales.
