Scientists from Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark found that taking gastrointestinal medications (proton pump inhibitors) may increase the risk of developing dementia. Research results published Alzheimer and Dementia (A&D).
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a group of medications that reduce stomach acid production. To evaluate the long-term effects of taking them, scientists conducted a study of 983,785 people aged 60 to 75 (who did not have dementia and were not taking medications for cognitive impairment). After collecting information about the health status of the subjects, an observation period that would last 18 years began.
During follow-up, 99,384 participants developed dementia. It was revealed that approximately 21.2% of the subjects with this disease took at least two PPI drugs, while this rate was 18.9% in the group of healthy participants. The likelihood of severe cognitive impairment was highest in participants who had used proton pump inhibitors for more than 15 years, the researchers noted. Additionally, dementia occurred more frequently in people aged 60-69 who regularly used PPIs.
Previous scientists statedHe said the blood test could detect dementia at an early stage.
