Olfr558 is found in cells responsible for nasal odor recognition. It has also been found in the kidneys and other organs. Scientists found that male mice with normal function of the Olfr558 protein receptor had higher diastolic and systolic blood pressure than female mice.
A study of young genetically modified mice found that female mice lacking the Olfr558 receptor gene had increased blood pressure, while male mice had decreased blood pressure. Scientists noted that the human counterpart of Olfr558 is called OR51E1. Women and men under the age of 50 who have a genetic mutation that reduces OR51E1 activity do not show typical sex-related differences in blood pressure.
