All fermented milk products have a similar effect, so there is no need to try to choose the healthiest one. The important thing is to eat three portions of dairy products a day. Alexandra Surzhik, nutritionist and functional nutritionist at the Federal Scientific Center of Food Systems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told socialbites.ca.
“Kefir, yoghurt and fermented baked milk use different bacteria that determine the taste, acidity and other properties of the product. It cannot be said that some bacteria are more beneficial than others. In general, different fermented milk drinks have similar effects on the body. They are often enriched with bacteria, resulting in a product with a double effect: both the initial bacteria and the added microorganisms will affect health. It is better to drink different fermented milk drinks alternately,” Surzhik explained.
The doctor added that the health effects of low-fat or regular yogurt may be different than that of yogurt or other fermented milk drinks.
“We need to strive to reduce the amount of saturated fat in the diet. Dairy products are rich in these. However, it is not recommended to consume only low-fat foods. The fat component allows you to enjoy the food by providing taste and a feeling of satiety. It is important to maintain balance and take into account the presence of high cardiovascular risk and other diseases. Since milk fat is the main source of vitamin A and also contains other beneficial substances, children are recommended to eat foods with a regular fat content.
You should consume three servings of different dairy products a day. For a liquid product, one serving is 200 ml, and for a spoonful – 125-150 ml. This does not mean that you need to drink three glasses of kefir a day. You can try: Add milk to tea, prepare salads with yoghurt sauce. But it is important to take into account the overall nutrition and not stick to one product,” the doctor concluded.
