According to a study conducted by scientists from the University of New Wales (Austria), people’s attention and memory improve in cloudy and rainy weather. results published In Journal of Experimental Social Psychology (JESP).
During the study, scientists asked volunteer mall visitors to take a test to assess their cognitive abilities. Subjects were asked to look at ten bright, eye-catching objects (small plastic toys) in a display window at the exit of a store. After the participants went outside, the scientists tried to find out how accurately the volunteers remembered the external features of the toys.
It turned out that on cold and rainy days, store visitors were able to list three times as many products as they had previously seen at the exhibition. Scientists have suggested that a “gloomy” atmosphere significantly improves attention and memory. Most likely, a reduced emotional background encourages people to look at surrounding objects and think more focused, while an elevated mood also contributes to distraction.
