In the United States, law enforcement officers detained 80-year-old Arthur Schubart from Montana. The man was accused of illegally breeding giant hybrids from ordinary sheep and Red Book mountain sheep (argali). This was reported by newspaper Guard.
According to court documents, Schubart and five others have been experimenting with breeding hybrid animals for sale to private game preserves in Texas since 2013.
To do this, Arthur Schubart purchased biological materials of argali from a hunter caught in Kyrgyzstan. He then went to a laboratory and obtained cloned animal embryos. These embryos were then transplanted into a sheep and argali emerged.
These animals were then used to artificially inseminate sheep to create larger, more valuable species of ungulates that could become attractive prey for hunters.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Kim described Schubart’s actions as “a bold plan to create a mass-produced hybrid breed of sheep for sale and hunting as trophies.”
Kim said the defendant violated the Lacey Act, which restricts wildlife trade and prohibits the sale of mislabeled wildlife.
Arthur Schubart confessed his crime. He faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
