Polyphenol extract from Limoncella apples protects the liver from damage caused by inflammatory bowel disease. This has been shown by a published study on mice. International Journal of Molecular Sciences (IJMS).
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, causes serious joint, skin, and eye problems and liver damage in 35% of patients. This may be due to intestinal microbes entering the liver due to increased intestinal permeability. The possible effectiveness of polyphenol substances in the treatment of these problems has been demonstrated.
In a new study, scientists tested polyphenol extracts from Limoncella apples collected in Italy. They used a special substance to induce ulcerative colitis in male mice. Polyphenols from apples significantly relieved inflammation in the colon of mice (this was shown by analysis of animal intestinal tissue and the molecules they contain) and reduced intestinal permeability. But most importantly, they reduced the degree of liver damage in the animals. This was shown by lower levels of liver enzymes in the blood and less accumulation of fat in the liver in mice treated with the polyphenol extract.
Findings suggest that small daily consumption of Limoncella apples may be beneficial for IBD patients.
