Today, one of the most popular methods for studying the functioning of the brain during motor activity is considered to be the analysis of hand movements recorded using electrodes implanted in brain structures (reaching experiment). Moreover, it is traditional in the scientific community to use two data interpretation models for this purpose: representational and dynamic.
According to the representational approach, each neuron is responsible for its own parameter of limb movement (acceleration, speed and direction of hand movement, angle and other features). The dynamic model treats motor activity as a whole as an object of study and focuses on its overall dynamics, not on individual neurons.
In the new study, researchers focused solely on analyzing brain waves. In addition to demonstrating the relationship between two brain phenomena (cortical traveling waves and rotational dynamics), the team presented two methods for measuring the wave.
Scientists used a method to estimate wave curvature without data compression; this allows them to analyze the rotations and speed of a wave in a 2D projection without losing useful information. The second method, estimating the degree of rotation, makes it possible to evaluate the real dynamics of neural activity in the data and compare them with each other.
Researchers managed to find out that the presence of cyclic changes in the activity of neurons is due to the presence of special waves of activity passing along the surface of the motor cortex of the brain. Based on this discovery, Russian scientists have developed two mathematical algorithms that make it possible to use the properties of these waves to evaluate how neuron activity changes during brain function. The use of these approaches in the future will increase the effectiveness of treatment of neurological diseases.
