Scientists from Southern Methodist University in the USA found that watching videos of children aged 17 to 30 months negatively affects their speaking skills and vocabulary. Research results published In the journal Acta Pediatrica.
302 parents caring for children aged 17 to 30 months participated in the study. They answered questions about children’s language skills and reported how much time they spent on various “media activities” each day.
This term refers to watching videos on the internet/TV, playing video games, video chatting, and reading e-books. Parents were also asked to explain why they chose certain methods to organize and teach their children’s leisure time.
After collecting information, scientists compared the obtained data with the level of speech development of children. The researchers assessed the subjects’ average vocabulary and length (two or more words spoken together).
It turned out that children, whose parents often show them various videos in order to calm down and have fun, use expressions and sentences containing fewer words, as a rule. However, the negative impact on language skills was reduced if the videos were used for educational purposes or to strengthen social connections, such as communicating with relatives on video platforms.
