Neuroscientists discover how a difficult childhood affects the brain 00:06

Scientists from the Singapore Institute of Clinical Sciences discovered what happens to the brain of a person who experiences various adversities in early childhood. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Nature Mental Health (NMH).

“Exposure to adverse conditions early in life has a lasting impact on the body, affecting both mental and physical health in adulthood. Study author Ai Peng Tan said, “Recent findings suggest that these effects are a result of the brain adapting to harsh conditions and changing the rate of development ” said.

The team examined neuroimaging data from 549 children. Young participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging at ages 4.5, 6, and 7.5.

The essence of the methodology was to analyze the structural-functional connection in the brain, an indicator reflecting the connection between the structure and function of the brain. This measure is particularly useful because it provides insight into neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to adapt and reorganize in response to new experiences).

Researchers have found evidence that brain development is accelerated in children who are highly exposed to a variety of life challenges. This trend was strongest during the preschool period, a critical period for brain maturation and the acquisition of cognitive and emotional skills.

Although accelerated brain development in response to challenges serves as an adaptive mechanism for coping with adverse conditions, it also has potential costs.

The study’s findings suggested that such rapid maturation may limit the potential for neuroplasticity, potentially affecting the development of higher brain functions and predisposing people to problems with cognitive and psychiatric disorders in adulthood.
