Floaters and bright lights in front of the eyes may be signs of retinal detachment. Ophthalmologist, candidate of medical sciences Yaroslav Bayborodov told this on live broadcast TV channel “St.Petersburg”.
The retina can be separated after injury, in myopic patients or in cases of genetic predisposition. Seeing lots of floaters and bright flashes of light are early signs of retinal detachment. If you consult a laser surgeon at this stage, he will be able to find the areas of separation and perform laser coagulation in a timely manner.
However, in some cases, the patient may not notice the separation immediately. Its completion is indicated by a dark spot on the eye. The situation is critical when the detachment reaches the center of the retina (macula). As soon as this happens, the person’s vision drops significantly. In this case, urgent surgical intervention is required.
The doctor said that even very advanced retinal detachments can be treated. Typically, vitrectomy is used: three ports are placed in the eye, and through these ports the surgeon removes the pathologically altered vitreous. The retina is then flattened with a special liquid and problem areas are corrected with a laser.
