Scientists from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland found that approximately seven in 10 men will experience some form of female sexual harassment in their lifetime. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Archives of Sexual Behavior (ASB).

Harassment, or sexual victimization, involves a range of sexual acts performed without a person’s consent, from rape and sexual assault to unwanted fondling or touching. Victimization occurs in different contexts and can come from strangers or a regular partner.

There is a widespread cultural belief that sexual victimization of men by women is impossible; because men need to be physically dominant, aggressive, independent and able to defend themselves. The authors of the study state that women should be the exact opposite: gentle, submissive and weak.

Scientists surveyed 1,124 British heterosexual men. Participants completed a battery of psychological tests to assess anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder under the condition of anonymity, and also answered questions about the women’s experiences of harassment.

The results showed that 71 percent of men had been sexually harassed by a woman at least once in their lives, 57 percent more than once, and 45 percent more than twice. 33 percent of respondents admitted to having sex under emotional duress, 29 percent admitted to having sex while drunk, and 5 percent admitted to being coerced by force or threat of harm. All of the participants described their experiences in negative terms.

The most common form of victimization was intimate caresses. These were followed by vaginal sex, kissing, oral and anal sex.

Scientists say their findings show that sexual harassment has a negative impact on people’s mental health, regardless of gender or the gender of the person violating their sexual freedom.
