Ophthalmologist explained the reasons for the feeling of sand in the eye 04:04

One of the common eye complaints is the “feeling of sand in the eyes”. Additionally, some people may subjectively complain of pain, burning, discomfort, foreign body and dryness sensations. Ph.D., an ophthalmologist, a microsurgeon, a laser surgeon at SM-Clinic, told socialbites.ca why such sensations may arise. Svetlana Mirgorodskaya.

According to the doctor, this condition may occur due to irritation or inflammation of the mucous membranes of the eye (conjunctiva and/or cornea). However, the reasons for this may be different. One of the most common is dry eye syndrome.

“Dysfunction of the meibomian glands may be associated with a change in tear composition due to hormonal imbalance, inflammatory damage to the glands responsible for tear production, impairment of the blink reflex during continuous visual work at close range (at a computer). , on the phone, while reading a book, with small details, etc.),” said Mirgorodskaya.

Also, according to him, the emergence of dry eye syndrome is often accompanied by regular wearing of contact lenses, or rather, violation of the rules of their use (irregular sanitation, improper removal / insertion).

Another cause is bacterial, viral and allergic pathologies of the anterior segment of the eye, such as conjunctivitis, blepharitis, keratitis. As the expert notes, they are often accompanied not only by sand, pain, burning sensation, but also by redness of the eyes, itching, lacrimation and eye discharge, and photophobia.

“Also, unpleasant sensations in the eyes may occur with a pathology such as lagophthalmos. “This is a condition that occurs when the eyelids do not close completely during sleep, or when paresis/paralysis of the eyelid muscles prevents the eyelids from closing, or in the postoperative period, for example, after blepharoplasty or droopy eyelid surgery,” added the ophthalmologist.

Also, this feeling may be a result of a side effect from taking a number of medications. Some eye drops, especially those containing stabilizing preservatives, can increase dryness, and some oral medications, such as birth control and antihistamines, can also be taken, the expert said.

Another common cause, according to Mirgorodskaya, is mechanical injury to the eyeball or the ingress of a foreign object (sawdust, flake, speck, insect, etc.). But the feeling of sand in the eyes is, as a rule, a secondary complaint in such cases, and more often there is a sharp pain or soreness in the eye, as well as lacrimation and photophobia.

“If you are worried about the feeling of ‘sand’ in your eyes, you should consult an ophthalmologist to accurately determine the cause and receive competent treatment,” the specialist said.

Previous ophthalmologists warned about the dangers of the popular eye makeup technique.
