Sitting for long periods at work linked to increased risk of death JAMA Network Open: Sedentary work increases risk of death from heart disease by 34% 3:14 p.m.

A study by scientists from Taipei Medical University in Taiwan JAMA Network Openshowed that sitting for long periods at work can potentially increase the risk of death from all causes and especially cardiovascular disease. Organizing a work routine that alternates between sitting and activity can reduce this risk.

The current study included 481,688 adults with no history of cardiovascular disease. Study participants were followed for approximately 12 years, from 1996 to 2017. At each visit to the researchers, participants filled out a questionnaire about their medical history and lifestyle and provided biological samples for testing.

Approximately 60% of the study group were in the mostly sitting group, 10% in the mostly non-sitting group, and 29% in the alternating sitting and non-sitting group. A total of 26,257 deaths were recorded in the study during the 12-year follow-up period. Approximately 57% of these deaths occurred in the first group.

Analysis of the findings showed that people who worked primarily sedentary had a 16% and 34% higher risk of all-cause death and cardiovascular death, respectively, compared to people who worked primarily sedentary. Especially people over the age of 60, smokers and people with chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension were at risk.
