Every year spent on education reduces the risk of death by 2%. Moreover, the protective effect extends to people of all ages, gender, place of residence, social and ethnic background. This was demonstrated by a study published in the journal Lancet Public Health.
Scientists analyzed data from 59 countries from more than 600 studies. They found that the risk of death decreased by 2% with each additional year of study. Those who completed six years of primary school had an average 13% lower risk. After graduating from high school, the risk decreased by almost 25%, and 18 years of education reduced the risk by 34%.
Additionally, the benefits of 18 years of education are comparable to the benefits of eating the ideal amount of vegetables. And it turns out that not going to school at all is as harmful as drinking five or more alcoholic drinks every day or smoking ten cigarettes for 10 years.
Although the benefits of education were greatest for young people, getting an education reduced the risk of death in people over 50 and even 70. Moreover, longer education has been equally effective in rich countries as in poor countries.
“Our focus now must be on areas of the world where we know access to schooling is low and where there is little research on the impact of education on health. “To stop persistent inequalities that cost lives, we need to increase social investment to ensure access to better, longer-lasting education around the world,” the scientists said.
