A polygraph examiner explains three ways to detect lies without requiring special knowledge 12:14

Research shows that an untrained person’s ability to detect lies is about 50%. But there are ways to increase your chances of success. For example, you might ask a person to retell the story in reverse or ask them to pay attention to the details of the story and the number of adjectives; The polygraph examiner, an employee of the VB Psychophysiology Laboratory, told socialbites.ca. Shvyrkova Institute of Psychology RAS Andrey Uchaev.

“In the experiment, we found that the details of the events described decreased during the process of retaining information in a free conversation. Therefore, based on this, lying can also be suspected. During our experiment, people talked more. At the same time, the person describes the events in general terms, rather than in detail. From a linguistic perspective, there are fewer adjectives in speech. The most interesting thing is that the number of questions of the polygraph examiner increases. Generally, the person who is lied to increases the number of questions, even if they are not aware that they are being lied to. This happens involuntarily,” said Uchaev.

The trick to asking a story to be told backwards is based on the claim that when telling a story backwards, a person begins to get confused and hesitate. This could also indicate a lie.

But the most proven option for detecting lies is profiling training. According to Uchaev, if a person has received special training, for example, in profiling, this ability increases to 75-80%.

“Profiling is understood as a set of techniques for detecting lies based on the analysis of verbal and non-verbal behavior. We look for changes in a person’s behavior as they describe different events. A person exhibits the same behavior when he mentions some objective information (how he got home, what books he read). When he tries to hide something, the content and speed of the speech, the volume and timbre of his voice, etc. It changes. Correctly, the expert noted that it is important that the expert must be “calibrated” to the specific person.
