Overuse of antifungal skin medications can lead to the development of drug-resistant germs and can also cause hormonal imbalances. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. Weekly Morbidity and Mortality Report (MMWR).
Large outbreaks of ringworm resistant to medications, including ointments and tablets, have occurred in Southeast Asia. Similar infections have been found in 11 US states. A new study showed that their occurrence may be associated with overprescription of antifungal medications.
Scientists examined prescriptions written in the USA for drugs used against fungal infections, including ketoconazole, nystatin and clotrimazole-betamethasone. It turns out that doctors, dermatologists and orthopedists in emergency rooms often prescribe without making a correct diagnosis: they simply examine the patient, but do not prescribe tests to confirm the infection.
Interestingly, overprescribing was associated with individual physicians. Of those who prescribed antifungals in 2021, 10% prescribed almost half of these medications. Additionally, since most topical antifungals can be purchased without a prescription, their actual uses are even broader.
Scientists believe patients and doctors should be educated about the dangers of overuse of antifungals. Therefore, the use of clotrimazole-betamethasone is thought to be an important factor in the development of drug-resistant ringworm. This medication may also cause skin damage when applied to skin folds such as the groin, buttocks, and armpits. Intensive use of clotrimazole-betamethasone may also cause hormonal problems.
