The return to service of the nuclear submarine Irkutsk has been postponed until the end of 2025. This was reported by TASS Citing a source close to the Russian military-industrial complex (MIC).
According to the agency, the submarine is currently undergoing repairs. As can be understood from the source’s words, the “combat power” of this submarine will increase significantly after modernization.
“Nuclear submarine “Irkutsk” <...> “It will return to service in the Pacific Fleet at approximately the end of 2025,” he said.
No official comment has been made on this issue yet.
In April 2022, TASS reported, citing a source in the shipbuilding industry reportedthat the nuclear submarine Irkutsk could return to the Russian Navy by the end of 2023. As a result of the modernization, the submarine should be able to carry essentially 48 new cruise missiles and use them to hit coastal targets.
According to the agency, they plan to equip nuclear submarines with Onyx and Zircon shells. Additionally, the submarine will be equipped with Kalibr-PL missiles.
