Scientists from the University of California, USA, discovered that eating less fat can protect against infectious diseases such as Covid-19. results published In Scientific Reports.
The study was carried out with four groups of mice. Rodents from the first group ate a diet based on saturated fats from coconut oil, from the second group a diet based on monounsaturated fats from genetically modified soybean oil, and from the third group a diet consisting of large amounts of polyunsaturated fats from regular soybean oil.
In all three groups, animals consumed more than 40% of calories from fat (10-15% is the norm). The study also included data from control mice on a low-fat diet.
Over the 24-week study period, all three groups of mice fed the high-fat diet were found to have changes in gene expression.
Altered genes are linked to how the body metabolizes medications, irritable bowel syndrome and colon cancer. Study results showed that high-fat diets also stimulated the synthesis of specific proteins in cells used by Covid-19 spike proteins to enter the body and infect people. The spike protein got its name from its structure; On the surface of the virus, such proteins appear as numerous spikes.
Scientists suggested that excessive fat consumption could lead to similar consequences in humans. They noted that occasionally overdoing the diet will not cause serious harm to health, but in the long run, increasing the amount of fat in the diet can weaken the immune system.
