Corruption is so widespread in China’s missile force and defense industrial base that U.S. officials now believe it is unlikely that Xi Jinping will consider major military action in the coming years, agency sources said.
U.S. intelligence has cited several examples of the effects of corruption in China, including missiles filled with water instead of fuel and vast missile silos in western China with hatches that do not work to allow the missiles to be launched effectively.
The United States assesses that corruption within China’s People’s Liberation Army, particularly when it comes to its missile force, has undermined confidence in its overall capabilities and set back some of Xi Jinping’s top modernization priorities. More than a dozen senior Chinese defense officials have been caught in a bribery case in the past six months, the agency said, in what could constitute China’s biggest crackdown on the country’s military in modern history.
The United States says the military purges show that China’s leader’s grip on the Communist Party remains strong and that he is serious about improving discipline, rooting out corruption and ultimately preparing China’s military for long-term war.
