About 8.3 thousand suspected cases of cholera were recorded in Sudan; Doctors have already failed to save 200 people. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) writes that it expresses deep concern about the spread of the disease in armed conflicts TASS.
The organization emphasized that the conflict in Sudan has seriously affected access to healthcare as the cholera epidemic continues to spread across the country.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and Sudan’s Ministry of Health, nearly 8,300 suspected cholera cases were reported in nine states as of December 23.
Most of the cases are in Gezira state, where intense fighting between the Sudanese army and emergency response forces has forced more than 300,000 people to flee their homes. In Sudan, humanitarian missions are trying to detect and treat cholera cases, as well as carry out vaccination campaigns. However, ongoing conflicts hinder efforts to control the cholera epidemic and the population’s access to basic public health services. OCHA noted that more than 70 percent of hospitals in conflict-affected areas are no longer functioning, and nearly two-thirds of Sudan’s population does not have access to healthcare.
Relations between the civilian and military components of the government in Sudan remain tense following the failed coup attempt in September 2020. Sudan has not had a functioning government since October 2021, when the military dismissed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s interim government and declared a state of emergency.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Response Force (RSF) in Khartoum escalated on April 15. There are casualties, including civilians, on both sides.
