Researchers from Wrexham Maelor Hospital (UK) found that most hypoallergenic skin care products contain ingredients that can cause dermatological irritation. The results of the scientists’ work were presented in an article published by the journal. Clinical and Experimental Dermatology (CED).
Hypoallergenic is a term used by businesses to advertise products such as shampoos and deodorants that are considered safe for people with sensitive skin or allergies; That is, these products do not contain substances that can irritate the skin. But the researchers’ report found that almost three-quarters of 208 hypoallergenic products contained an allergy-causing ingredient.
The most common allergen in hypoallergenic products was fragrance, found in 40% of products tested. The authors of the study emphasized that buyers should carefully examine the composition of products to check the content of common allergens and not believe marketers’ assurances on packaging.
