Drinking coffee during the day and small amounts of alcohol in the evening can make it easier to fall asleep and keep you awake throughout the day. In this respect reports Daily mail.
Scientists from the University of Washington found that if a person drinks coffee in the morning of the same day, a small amount of alcohol in the evening helps him fall asleep. At the same time, coffee helps relieve daytime sleepiness caused by alcohol consumed the day before.
17 people participated in the research. Scientists tried to find out how important the timing of alcohol and coffee consumption is for regulating sleep and wakefulness. It turns out that each cup of coffee or similar caffeinated beverage reduces average sleep time by about 10 minutes per day, or one hour per week (assuming a person drinks coffee six times a week). However, if one glass of wine or beer is consumed for every cup of coffee, the duration of night sleep is reduced by only five minutes per day or half an hour per week.
However, if you drink too much alcohol, its calming effect will disappear and your sleep will become restless. Additionally, drinking coffee in the morning and alcohol in the afternoon can cause drowsiness and reduce performance.
Scientists also noted that attempts to improve sleep patterns with alcohol and caffeine may be harmful to health. In the long term, these drinks can cause insomnia and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. The researchers added that it is best to avoid both alcohol and coffee to improve sleep quality.
