Scientists from Toyohashi University of Technology discovered a connection between the color of the interlocutor’s face and the accuracy of recognizing his emotions. It turns out that emotions on faces with a redder hue appear brighter to people. Research results published In Taylor & Francis magazine.
It is known that redness on the face can indicate feelings of anger or joy. The study found that skin color can also affect people’s perception of covert facial expressions.
Experiment participants were asked to look at pictures of faces expressing hybrid emotions. These are neutral faces where you can recognize signs of anger, joy, and surprise. Subjects rated hybrid expressions on pale-skinned faces as calm.
The researchers then assigned different skin tones to the people in the photographs. Subjects noted that the emotions on their reddish faces became more expressive. Happiness, anger and smiling were more evident.
The authors explained that skin color affects how people read emotions through the perception of facial expressions. It is assumed that the research can be used to improve the work of artificial intelligence. Such algorithms are used in the fields of criminal psychology and customer service.
