Scientists from Columbia University in the US, as part of a research team, discovered that women who lead an active lifestyle are less likely to get breast, uterine and bowel cancer. Physical activities such as walking can reduce the chances of these diseases. In this respect reports EurekAlert.
14,274 American women participated in the study. Scientists collected information about the participants’ body mass index, lifestyle and eating habits. The researchers also took into account where the subjects lived and how often they walked. Observations of participants were carried out over a period of three decades.
As of the end of 2016, 18% of the subjects were diagnosed with cancer for the first time. The most common types are breast cancer (53%), followed by colon (14%) and uterus (12%). Some participants were diagnosed with ovarian and skin cancer. Most often, the disease is diagnosed in women who lead a sedentary lifestyle. The risk of cancer was lower in participants who were active and walked a lot.
Researchers noted that living in areas with parking spaces and suitable sidewalks motivated women to walk more.
