Scientist explained how it is possible to convert visible light lasers into X-ray lasers 18:30

Director of the Laser Institute and Plasma Technologies socialbites.ca.NRNU MEPhI stated that the Nobel laureates who received the physics award in 2023 used non-linear media to reach a time of attoseconds (10 to the eighteenth power of a second) and convert visible lasers into X-ray lasers. told Doctor of Mathematical Sciences Andrey Kuznetsov.

2023 Nobel Prize in Physics there is Scientists Pierre Agostini of Ohio State University, Ferenc Krausz of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, and Anne L’Huillier of Pierre and Marie Curie University for creating an attosecond laser that can be used to see the movement of electrons inside atoms and molecules.

According to the expert, laser makes it possible to release all the energy accumulated in the active environment in a very short time. Many scientific teams are now trying to increase laser power by reducing the pulse duration. However, according to the scientist, by reducing the duration of the laser pulse, scientists encountered a number of problems.

The shorter the laser pulse duration, the wider its spectrum. The laser pulse, shortened to femtosecond dimensions, is converted into white light (supercontinuum) containing the entire range of visible light.

“The process of shortening laser pulses is limited to at least a few half-wave periods. This means that in the visible range the laser cannot be shorter than about 2 femtoseconds. Therefore, in order to shorten the pulse duration, it is necessary to reduce the wavelength,” Kuznetsov explained.

To achieve attosecond times it is necessary to use the capabilities of nonlinear media.

“It is necessary to take advantage of the fact that nonlinear media “multiply” the frequencies of laser radiation interacting with them (quantum energy). The use of such nonlinear effects in gas jets, plasma, and solids has made it possible to convert visible lasers into X-ray lasers. “With lasers with wavelengths of the order of tens of nanometers, it is already possible to obtain pulses lasting attoseconds,” Kuznetsov explained.
