Scientists from the University of Adelaide in Australia, as part of a research team, found that daily consumption of black tea may help fight diabetes. It turned out that people who like this drink have a lower risk of developing both prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. In this respect reports EurekAlert.
Prediabetes is a period before the onset of diabetes, which is a predisposing condition for this disease.
1923 people between the ages of 20 and 80 participated in the research. 436 participants were previously diagnosed with diabetes and 352 had prediabetes. The remaining 1,135 people had normal blood sugar levels. Participants described how often they drank tea and what type of beverage they preferred. The scientists then took urine samples from each subject and evaluated their glucose-creatinine ratio and insulin resistance.
People with diabetes often have an increased ability of the kidneys to reabsorb sugar, so their kidneys draw in more glucose and reduce its excretion in the urine. This helps increase blood sugar levels. The results showed that daily tea consumption was associated with an increase in urine glucose. This means that excess sugar is eliminated from the body and cannot cause an increase in glucose levels.
Researchers estimate that drinking tea reduces the risk of prediabetes by 15% and type 2 diabetes by 28%. Black tea has a more pronounced therapeutic effect.
The drink’s ability to stimulate the kidneys to release glucose is similar to the effect of some antidiabetic drugs, the authors noted. Drinking black tea along with taking medication can help you better control your blood sugar levels.
