An international team of archaeologists from Egypt, Germany and Austria discovered hundreds of jars containing wine remains during excavations in central Egypt. In this respect Wrote RIA Novosti agency cites a message from the press service of the country’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

“An archaeological mission from Egypt, Germany and Austria worked in the tomb of First Dynasty Queen Merneit in the Umm El-Kaab site of Abydos in Sohag, discovering hundreds of previously unopened sealed jars. The Ministry stated that there were traces of wine inside.

Mustafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt Wrote Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram stated that the size of the jugs found was quite large. According to him, they have been preserved in a satisfactory condition. Vaziri estimates the age of the wine in the jugs to be approximately 5 thousand years old.

The Ministry noted that in addition to jugs, funeral furniture was also found during the excavations.

A Queen’s Life

The ministry also reported that new historical information about Merneit’s life was revealed during excavations at the queen’s tomb. According to the inscriptions on one of the tablets found in the tomb, the queen “managed central government institutions” such as the treasury. From this we can conclude that the woman “occupies a high position.”

As Dietrich Raue, director of the German Archaeological Institute, noted, Merneit was probably the only woman to have her own monumental tomb in Egypt’s first royal cemetery at Abydos, and was arguably the most influential woman of her age.

The archaeologist noted that Merneit may have been the first female queen of Ancient Egypt. For now, his identity remains a mystery to scientists.

Additionally, scientists discovered a group of 41 graves near the tomb. They may have belonged to Queen Merneith’s courtiers and servants. Head of the delegation, Christiane Köhler, said that the burial complex was built from unbaked adobe, clay and wood. According to the archaeologist, the tombs appeared gradually over a long period of time. Köhler emphasized that this observation supports the possibility of ritual human sacrifice during the First Dynasty.
