Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai found that people who took a long time to recover from Covid-19 had abnormalities in their immune and hormonal systems. It turns out that chronic fatigue, rapid heartbeat, sleep problems and other consequences of coronavirus are not associated with insufficient rest and are not psychosocial diseases. In this respect reports MedicalXpress.
268 men and women with long-term COVID patients participated in the study. They all showed symptoms specific to the coronavirus: breathing problems, rapid heartbeat, headaches, dizziness, confusion, fatigue, digestive problems, muscle and joint pain. Scientists took blood samples from all participants.
It turned out that volunteers often showed signs of a malfunction in the immune system – the results of blood tests showed abnormal activity of T cells in the body. T cells fight pathogenic organisms or produce immune molecules that are weapons against infections. However, the participants’ immune systems were so weakened that diseases that were previously dormant in the body, such as the herpes virus, took effect.
The blood test also helped identify signs of hormonal dysfunction, such as decreased morning cortisol levels. This hormone, whose highest concentration occurs in the morning hours, plays an important role in the body. It regulates sleep and wakefulness, metabolism, immune response to inflammation, and stress response.
The researchers noted that such results indicate that there is no psychosocial nature to long-term coronavirus symptoms. Despite the human psyche being susceptible to neuroses after COVID, clinical biomarkers indicating deterioration in health should not be ignored. Scientists hope that in the future, interpretation of blood tests will allow determining the exact cause of post-Covid syndrome and recommending individual treatment.
