A new technology has been developed to obtain energy from water 08:56

Scientists at Southern Federal University (SFU) have created microrod material to produce environmentally friendly fuel from water. SFU told socialbites.ca about this.

Today the problem of searching for new energy “green” technologies is especially urgent. One successful type of such technologies is catalysts, which are substances or materials that accelerate electrochemical reactions. The most effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and hydrogen evolution are platinum and its derivatives. However, these materials are extremely expensive and do not protect against fuel-oxidizing chemicals or provide long-term operational reliability.

SFedU scientists have created a new material that could help produce hydrogen and oxygen from water more efficiently: microrod copper-molybdenum sulfide (CuMoS).

“Over the past few decades, various transition metal catalysts have been investigated for electrochemical applications, the degradation of pollutants, and especially the splitting of water. Copper ions are the primary of these metals due to their good conductivity, high stability, availability, and low cost. Other scientists’ research has focused on 1T crystalline phase MoS2′ “It has been shown that CuMoS can achieve good catalytic performance without any oxidation on the active edges. Therefore, the main goal of the research was to consciously synthesize CuMoS with higher electronic conductivity, stability and durability,” he said.

He said CuMoS microrods have high activity to produce both hydrogen and oxygen, which reduces the total energy required to split water compared to using catalysts for each reaction.

“The practical significance of our results lies in the potential for green hydrogen production and energy storage. The scientist noted that this technology could contribute to the transition to sustainable energy by significantly increasing the efficiency of water splitting.”

In the future, the team faces the task of optimizing the synthesis process of CuMoS microrods, expanding the production scale and testing the material in real conditions.

Previously in Russia developed Environmentally friendly heating system in residential buildings.
