Scientists from Seoul Dongguk University found that black goji berry extract has great potential in preventing various diseases, including cancer, vascular diseases and heart diseases, but more research is needed to confirm these effects. The research was published in the journal nutrients.
The review authors reviewed existing studies on the berries’ effects. Lycium ruthenicum MurrayAlso known as black goji berries. This plant grows in the deserts of China’s Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Scientists have found that due to the high content of tannins, phenols and anthocyanins, goji berries have pronounced antioxidant properties, that is, they protect cells from the damage of reactive oxygen species. Polysaccharides in goji berries may inhibit the growth of pancreatic cancer cells. Additionally, goji extract reduces levels of substances associated with chronic inflammation, which are risk factors for many age-related diseases. Researchers also found that anthocyanins from goji berries improved the cognitive abilities (spatial learning and memory) of mice.
Experiments on human breast cells have shown that black goji berry fruit extracts suppress the proliferation of cancer cells. They have also demonstrated their ability to protect heart cells from damage during myocardial infarction.
Scientists have concluded that goji berries can be used as a preventive measure against chronic diseases of the cardiovascular system. However, the safety and effectiveness of goji extracts have not been confirmed due to insufficient studies in cells and animals.
