Veterinarians in Poland found that a water additive containing pomegranate extract could help dogs maintain healthy teeth by limiting the buildup of plaque and tartar. The research was published in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science.
At least 80% of dogs three years of age and older suffer from periodontitis, which is inflammation of the tissue around the tooth that holds the tooth in the gum. This disease can cause tooth loss and is also associated with other health risks, such as cardiovascular and lung diseases. The main cause of periodontal inflammation is poor oral hygiene: it is difficult to maintain, especially in dogs that do not allow teeth to be brushed.
In the new study, researchers conducted an experiment on 40 dogs with mild to moderate gingivitis. The animals belonged to 14 breeds, from Yorkshire terriers to huskies. Her teeth were professionally cleaned and polished under anesthesia to remove all plaque and tartar.
The dogs were then randomly divided into two groups: one was given water supplemented with 1% pomegranate, the other was given plain water. However, the scientists who analyzed the data did not know which group took which supplement.
The results showed that after 30 days of brushing and polishing, dogs receiving the daily supplement scored 47% less in plaque and 24% less in tartar than dogs in the control group.
The authors suggest that water supplementation may help limit the buildup of plaque and tartar after professional dental cleanings. Previous experiments have shown that pomegranate extract inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria and biofilm formation.
Previous scientists was created A drug that can replace fitness.
