Scientists from Sichuan University have discovered a genetic link between migraines and breast cancer. The research was published in the journal BMC Cancer.
Migraine is a common neurological disorder and its main symptom is attacks of throbbing pain in the head, usually on one side. Migraines are more common in women and are associated with an increased risk of dementia and cardiovascular disease. Previous studies on the relationship between migraine and breast cancer have yielded conflicting results.
In a new study, researchers tested the link between DNA mutations associated with an increased risk of breast cancer or migraine. They used data from 102,804 women with migraines and 771,257 women without migraines.
The analysis showed that genetic predisposition to migraine is associated with genetic predisposition to breast cancer. Migraines with aura were associated with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer (ER+), whereas migraines without aura were associated with estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer (ER-). This discovery could improve early detection of tumors in women with migraine.
The strength of the study was the careful selection of mutations (SNPs): scientists used only those with the strongest association with migraine. They also adapted to other factors that increase breast cancer risk, such as obesity.
