WHO said hypertension drugs could save 76 million lives. WHO: High blood pressure drugs could save 76 million lives 12:48

Distributing blood pressure medications could save 76 million lives between 2023 and 2050, according to a new report from the World Health Organization (WHO). It is reported on this website WHO.

Hypertension is diagnosed if blood pressure is above 140/90 mmHg. Art. in the US or above 130/80 mm Hg. Art. In the European Union. It affects one in three adults worldwide and can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney damage and other health problems.

The number of people living with hypertension increased from 650 million to 1.3 billion between 1990 and 2019. Most live in low- and middle-income countries, and four in five patients with high blood pressure do not have access to treatment. Increasing the number of patients treated with hypertension drugs to the level of developed countries can prevent 79 million heart attacks and 17 million heart failure cases by 2050. WHO points to Canada and South Korea as examples, where national programs have resulted in more than 50% of patients in need receiving medication for hypertension.

What makes the situation even more complicated is that almost half of people with hypertension are unaware of their condition. The World Health Organization report highlights that prevention, early diagnosis and effective treatment of hypertension are among the most effective public health interventions, with economic benefits outweighing costs by approximately 18 times.

WHO also emphasizes that lifestyle changes can prevent or reduce hypertension. These include eating healthier, reducing salt intake, giving up tobacco and alcohol, and regular physical activity.
