Mercadona, a physical supermarket and online sales company, is participating today in Operation Kilo de Primavera organized by the Spanish Federation of Food Banks from 30 May to 4 June. The company makes its outlets open to fundraising campaigns.
In Alicante, 97 Mercadona stores in the state participate, where “Bosses” (customers) can make monetary donations at checkout in multiples of 1 Euro at the time of purchase. Donated amounts will be converted into food for delivery to each of the participating Food Banks. Mercadona is collaborating on this social initiative with a commitment to encourage customers to participate in this charity event.

This year, the company has donated 67 tons of food in Alicante and basic needs products to 6 soup kitchens, food banks and other social organizations with which it cooperates in the region. This donation at the end of April is equivalent to over 1,100 shopping carts.
A sustainable social action policy integrated into Mercadona’s CSR strategy
One of Mercadona’s commitments to the community is to share some of what they get from the community. To this end, the Social Responsibility Plan has been developed, which addresses the company’s social and ethical component through different sustainable lines of action that strengthen its commitment to shared growth.

Another strategic line of the Social Responsibility Plan is sustainability. To do this, it has its own Environmental Management System, based on circular economy principles and focusing on logistics optimization, energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable production and plastic reduction.
In this sense, Mercadona, together with Totaler suppliers, is working on Strategy 6.25 to achieve a triple goal by 2025: to reduce plastic by 25%, to make all packaging made of this material recyclable and to recycle all plastic waste. It also works to improve air quality in our cities through the Sustainable Urban Distribution Project and trucks and vans powered by cleaner and more efficient technologies.
Since 2011, it has been a member of the United Nations Global Compact for the defense of fundamental values in terms of human rights, labor standards, the environment and the fight against corruption.
