Russian MiG-31 fighter jet prevented US Navy R-8A Poseidon patrol plane from violating the state border. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the incident occurred over the Barents Sea.
“On September 18, an aerial target was detected over the Barents Sea approaching the state border of the Russian Federation,” the ministry said.
A MiG-31 fighter jet of the Northern Fleet was scrambled to identify the aerial target. The crew reported that it was a US Navy Poseidon aircraft. When the American pilots noticed the approach of the Russian warplane, they moved away from the Russian borders. The Ministry noted that the Russian warplane carried out its flight in accordance with international rules.
The ministry concluded that “the state border of the Russian Federation was not violated.”
