Scientists at Penza State University (PSU) have developed a neural network to unambiguously determine the authenticity of liquid medicines. Tests on real drugs showed that the method is 100% accurate. The analysis takes approximately 10 minutes. socialbites.ca was told about this at the university.
According to Roszdravnadzor, the share of low-quality pharmaceutical batches produced in domestic industrial production for 9 months of 2022 amounted to 71.9%. It turned out that 28.1 percent of foreign medicines were of poor quality. The most dangerous violations of the quality of medicinal products that are difficult to identify are falsification of the drug before its expiration date and violation of storage conditions.
Special equipment and expensive consumables are required to determine the quality of liquid medicines. PSU scientists have proposed a cheaper method based on examining the surface tension (tensiometric properties) of a drop of the drug. Its shape and volume are automatically recorded by the device, and then the software (including the neural network) compares the tensiometric properties of the drug and the standard sample.
Scientists studied the voltage measurement properties of 10 drugs (albumin, analgin, mannitol, gelofusin, baralgin, drotaverin, ketanov, ketorolac, no-shpa, ketorol). Scientists were able to detect fake products in 100% of cases.
“Our method will help solve the problem of identifying substandard and expired drugs. Methods based on determining the physicochemical properties of liquids make it possible to easily and quickly identify low-quality drugs,” Dmitry Kireev, a student of the PSU Medical Institute, told socialbites.ca.
The development can be implemented in practical healthcare and in all organizations specializing in the production and sale of medicines. The authors of the development plan plan to develop the device that determines the voltage measurement characteristics in order to reduce its cost.
