Scientists from the National Institute of Health Malaysia found that the ketogenic diet can reduce testosterone levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thus increasing the chances of pregnancy. The study was published on: Journal of the Endocrine Society.
Women with PCOS often experience increased production of the hormone testosterone, which prevents ovulation (the release of eggs from the ovaries) and makes it difficult to get pregnant. In addition, the disease is often accompanied by insulin insensitivity and obesity.
In the new study, researchers conducted a meta-analysis of seven studies on women with PCOS who followed the ketogenic diet. This type of nutrition involves greatly reducing carbohydrate intake and increasing fat intake to put the body into a state of ketosis. In this case, the body receives energy from fat, which contributes to weight loss.
One meta-analysis found that women with PCOS who followed the ketogenic diet for at least 45 days lost an average of 11% of their body weight.
In addition, the patients’ testosterone levels also decreased. The ratio of pituitary luteinizing hormone to follicle-stimulating hormone levels was lower. This indicates that ovarian function is improving and the chances of ovulation are increasing.
Despite the possible benefits of the ketogenic diet, any low-carb diet carries a risk of heart disease and cancer due to consumption of too much fat and protein. More research is needed to evaluate the balance of risks and benefits of this diet for women with PCOS.
