An international team of scientists, including experts from Moscow State University. Lomonosov found that late paternity is associated with abnormal development of the children’s nervous system. The results of the work of scientists are presented as follows: magazine Human Reproductive Update.
With age, mammalian sperm accumulate genetic and epigenetic changes that can affect the health of their offspring. For example, DNA methylation, a chemical modification that controls the operation of these genes, changes in parts of a set of genes responsible for the development of an unborn child’s nervous system.
Scientists studied the features of epigenetic changes in the spermatozoa of aged fathers. Such phenomena are not related to mutations as they do not change the nucleotide sequence of DNA. However, in addition to being able to turn genes on and off, they can also change the way they work.
In the future, the authors plan to conduct further studies to determine exactly how these changes affect the nervous system of late children.
