Scientists from Stanford University (USA) have identified a pathway in the brain that controls libido in men. The discovery will help find new ways to increase libido in men with libido problems. there was work published in Cell magazine.
The authors used a mouse model: three-week-old male rodents were weaned from their mothers and their brain activity was observed. Thus, scientists were able to follow the development of the brain in isolation from the social environment. The authors then mapped the hypothalamic neurons.
The hypothalamus receives signals from almost all areas of the central nervous system and uses them to generate signals that are sent to the pituitary gland. In response, the pituitary gland releases various hormones that stimulate many endocrine glands in the body.
It turns out that all aspects of sexual behavior – mating, physical contact, libido and pleasure – come from the amygdala and affect the hypothalamus.
By influencing the neurons of the discovered pathway, the authors were able to significantly increase sexual behavior, including mating with inanimate objects, as well as shorten the recovery time after ejaculation in mice.
In the future, experts plan to identify a similar pathway in female mice.
