This Thursday, two workers died when the metal structure of an elevated highway under construction collapsed this morning. An incident in which six more people were injured in Shizuoka, central Japan.
Police received a report at around 3:00 am local time (GMT 1800 on Wednesday) that the foundations of a section of an elevated road being built on the ring road, approximately 65 meters long and 3 meters wide, had collapsed. According to details released by the Japanese public channel NHK, about 30 people were working at the scene at the time of the incident, and two of them died. The affected section of a heavily trafficked highway has been closed to traffic since morning while the causes of the incident were investigated and damage was assessed.
According to local planning officials, the upgrade project, initiated in 2016 to ease traffic congestion in the area, is expected to be completed around 2026. A neighbor who lives near the site of the collapse told NHK he “thought it was an earthquake because I heard two knocks and a shaking was felt nearby”. The woman in her 30s said she was “afraid to drive” there now.
