Scientists propose a way to produce gas in fish farms to generate energy 13:48

Scientists have proposed to produce biogas from the waste of fish farms. Reported by the University of Gothenburg.

In the last few years, aquaponic farms that combine fish farming with vegetable farming have become popular. Aquaponics uses nutrient-rich water produced by fish (aquaculture), which can be used to fertilize plants in a closed hydroponic system with the help of naturally grown bacteria in it.

“By decomposing fish excrement in an anaerobic environment and “digesting” it with bacteria, we can obtain a concentrated gas mixture containing 70 percent methane that can be used as fuel. This could turn aquaponics into an energy source,” says Viktor Lobanov, a PhD student in the Department of Marine Biology at the University of Gothenburg. .

The study also shows that nutrients released from waste decomposition are more suitable for plants than synthetic nutrient solutions.

“Fish waste contains many nutrients. They could also be used in aquaponics to enable more sustainable food production than they are today,” says Viktor Lobanov.

Another advantage of the described technology is that when biogas is used as a fuel, carbon dioxide is produced, which is a necessary additive when plants are grown in a confined space such as a greenhouse.

It should be noted that the amount of gas released in fish farms will in any case be small and will only be sufficient to provide energy to the farm itself.

ancient biologists suggested Fight pest flies by editing their genomes.
