Francisco Gómez Manzanares (Vitoria, 1984) previously hiding under the name of David In order to protect half of Spain, he cold-bloodedly defrauded an unknown number of victims, especially women. first seduced, then economically destroyed and emotional, he was beaten as a swindler in his hometown.
The journalistic investigation gathered in ‘El Estafador’ (The Summer Peninsula) reconstructs and reveals a life full of lies that has allowed him to hold nearly three million euros that did not belong to him. all the professions he invented to deceiveA: Ertzaintza agent, airplane pilot, Formula 1 tester, Marine Rescue sergeant or member of Messi’s Barça coaching team. And the publication of this book has also brought to light new testimonies that shed more light on his final year in Vitoria, before he became a “female swindler.” In 1999, Francisco still called himself Fran and sneaked into a group of radio amateurs. EL PERIÓDICO contacted three of them. Known as the ‘Audi agent’.
Francisco was driving an Audi A4 in the spring of 1999, which extorted an employee of a bank in San Sebastián. There was a radio station in the car. In the late 1990s, before the cell phone boom, it was normal for amateur radio groups to proliferate. Francisco started the radio station in his ex-girlfriend’s car and, after listening for a while, introduced himself. “He asked if he could come to one of our meetings and we said yes,” they remember 23 years later.
Said he was an Ertzaintza agent.was part of the special units that remained at the mysterious Berozi base. That’s why he wasn’t in uniform. He also said that he had just settled in Vitoria and did not know anyone. “His friendliness and generosity – he always paid for the drinks – impressed us”. He was slightly older than most of the men in the group. He was 25 when most were over twenty. Since it doesn’t have a ‘nickname’ and everyone has one per station, they christened it ‘Audi’ as it uses A4.
‘Audi’ has become a kind of leader for the group. Trust has been earned A place to be swept away at the end, as each member individually would do years later at the Urko casino in Eibar. “He was always willing to help us,” they explain. The boxing bar that Francisco shared with his girlfriend, located right in front of the house on Beato Tomás de Zumárraga street – which he would soon leave after ruining it – became his regular meeting point at the suggestion of the scammer.
What Francisco did not foresee was that that Boxing bar was also frequented by an Ertzaintza commander. He could not present himself before him as an agent of the Basque autonomous establishment. “So it had to be used conscientiously so that no one in our group interacted with the chief of police,” they explain. But on the other hand, he wanted to get even closer to command. So much so that he won his friendship. And even managed to invite ertzaina to her house. The only photo of Francisco in a police uniform Basque is the one made in the formal attire of this chef, who believes there is nothing wrong with consenting to have a photo with him. But those photos were to be used to reinforce the absurdity.
In the years following this final stage in Vitoria, Francisco would become a prey to women caught first in conversations and later in dating practices. It is not unreasonable that this first stage of amateur radio should be an apprenticeship that he would later use to seduce on the Internet. “Francisco placed a powerful antenna on the roof of his house so that he could continue chatting with the station even from home. But he did not pay for it, and the owners of the business that gave it to him came to his house, dismantled it and took it. Away,” remember his old ‘friends’.
Francisco tried to sell his house to one of the radio amateurs. —actually, this wasn’t his house, it was his girlfriend’s house—but he didn’t bite. He offered to start another half cell phone business. It bit. The deal was to put 1,100,000 pesetas on each. The radio amateur did his part and gave the money to Francisco, who spent it.
In a judgment of the Audiencia de Vitoria of the time, it was proved that Francisco defrauded and defrauded his girlfriend that year, the radio amateur from whom he stole millions, and two other victims, from whom he received another million and 600,000 pesetas. respectively, with An alleged investment in the United States and the dream purchase of a cutting-edge computer.
In the summer of 1999, one of the radio amateurs smelled that Francisco was not clean wheat and began to investigate. At the store, where he bought the antenna without paying, he received his DNI, which appears on the invoice. With this knowledge, he went to see Ertzaintza’s commander, who often came to the Boxing bar to convey his suspicions. The police were surprised, but sent Francisco’s DNI to the police bases and Fraud crimes before 1999. “The worst part was that this boss was preparing an anti-drug operation against a bar based on information provided by Francisco, whom he blindly trusted,” says this ham radio.
The swindler was arrested soon after. However, he was released a few days later and embarked on an escape that would take him from place to place. Barcelona, Castelldefels, Ourense, Madrid, Seville, Eibar or Zaragoza. He is currently serving his sentence in the Nanclares de la Oca prison and Accumulate jail sentences by 2030, but may soon start receiving temporary permits. It was condemned by 50 victims. He scammed many more. Some women continue to suffer serious psychological consequences. Although he has the right to be rehabilitated, they all believe he will cheat again.
Radio amateurs in Vitoria never heard from him again.
