The new method will enable the cat to be neutered without surgery by stimulating the production of AMH hormone. This was reported by TASS with reference to the press service of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
“We have found that an increased proportion of the hormone AMH in the females’ body leads to suppression of the growth of follicles in the animals’ ovaries, which inhibits the animals’ fertilization. A single injection of our gene therapy causes the muscles of the cats to produce the hormone AMH and maintain a concentration of this substance hundreds of times higher than the normal level.” said.
The functionality of this therapy was tested by the authors in an experiment with three middle-aged domestic cats (6-7 years old) and six young cats. Observations over the next two years showed that the therapy was able to completely suppress the egg production of the animals’ ovaries and render them sterile. The effectiveness of the method has also been proven by several matings with males.
In nature, the hormone AMH is responsible for the formation of reproductive organs in embryos, and also stops the normal functioning of the ovaries in women after menopause. The authors hope that its use in neutering cats will eliminate painful and stressful surgery.
