Researchers at Columbia University have found that flavanols (nutrients found in certain fruits and vegetables) reduce age-related memory loss. study published magazine Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
Flavonoids are the largest class of plant polyphenols. They are abundant in blueberries, green tea, walnuts, citrus fruits, grapes, dark chocolate and many other foods.
In their current study, the authors analyzed data from a number of previous studies on brain aging. The analysis found a correlation between flavanol intake and memory test scores among older adults. Individuals over the age of 60 who followed a diet low in flavanols showed a marked improvement in memory after deficient in these substances.
“This confirms that certain nutrients are vital for maintaining optimal health in the aging brain. The authors note that as we age, just like our developing brains, certain nutrients are needed for optimal health.
