At a meeting of the commission of the State Council of the Russian Federation in the direction of “Ecology and Natural Resources” within the framework of the X Nevsky International Congress on the Environment, the results of the implementation of the project “Clean Arctic” were presented, the organizers said.
Chairman of the State Council Commission Gleb Nikitin noted that the regions may consider the possibility of creating voluntary regional detachments under the project and sending volunteers from the Russian regions.
It was also proposed to develop proposals to study in detail the issue of the legitimacy of the work of volunteers in the Arctic and to update regulatory and other documents so that volunteers can legally carry out clean-up work.
“Arctic Cleanup” is an environmental project to clean the Arctic regions from garbage and hazardous waste. The project, which started in Russia in July 2021, was supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Rosprirodnadzor, Molodezhka ONF and other organizations. Over two years, more than 5 thousand tons of waste was collected and sent for processing in the nine Arctic regions of the Russian Federation.
This year the “Clean Arctic” started from Karelia. The first subbotnik was held in the Belomorsky district.
