Neurologists discover group boxing is beneficial for Parkinson’s 15:13

Scientists from Edith Cowan University have discovered that unbeatable boxing can improve the quality of life of people suffering from Parkinson’s disease (PD). Research published magazine PM&R.

Ten people with early-stage Parkinson’s disease were included in the study. They boxed in a group three hours a week for 15 weeks. Classes were held on a special dummy with soft targets.

Competitors had to take turns hitting different targets and then rest no more than two minutes.

Nine out of 10 participants improved their scores on the Uniform Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale, a tool used to measure the progression and severity of Parkinson’s disease. Patients also reported improved sleep and quality of life.

The authors noted that the benefit of group boxing lies in the combination of many aspects of therapy, including exercise, cognitive stimulation, and socialization. They also believe that boxing may be effective for other neurological diseases such as Huntington’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
